SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

A meeting of the Committee of the South Canterbury Jockey Club was held last evening. Present—Mr A. StG Hamersky, in the Chair, Messrs D. Maclean, j. W. White, E. G. Kerr, J. R. Stansell, and F. W. Cook, Secretary.

Messrs J. D. Kett, C. Bourn, A. R. Spalding, J. Melton, M. Fruhauf, and G. U. Miles were elected members of the Club.

A letter was read from the Property Tax Commissioner in reply to one from the Club relative to the assessment of the racecourse reserve. The Commissioner stated that the course was exempt from rating, and that the assessment would bo struck off the list, but this exemption did not refer to local rating. A letter was read from the Timaru Tradesmen’s Racing Club, asking the S.C.J.O. to reconsider their former resolution on the subject of lending them the course.

The Secretary (Mr Uoxhead),also gave additional reasons in support of the application, and stated that the Tradesmens Club did not propose to canvass for subscriptions, and would willingly pay a reasonable sum for the use of the Grand Stand &c.

It was decided, as this meeting was not a full one, to defer consideration of the letter till a special meeting, to be held on the 20th inst.

Mr Stansell gave notice of a motion to alter the rule relating to the election of members, so as to require open voting instead of the ballot at such elections.

It was decided to arrange for the services of the Timaru Artillery Band to play on the course during the race days.

The following accceptances and general entries were received : Sires’ Prod oca (Stakes, weight for age. Mr Curtis’ Sweet William (Castaway— Sunbeam). Mr Orbeli’s Drift (Castaway—Lady Emma), Mr Denoon’s Norman (Castaway— Midee).
