[By Telegraph.j (Per s.s. Wairarapa at the Bluff.) Melbourne, March 9. Mr R. Walpole, Secretary to the Calcutta Exhibition interviewed Dr L. L. Smith. The latter promised to use his utmost efforts to secure the representation of Victorian wines at Calcutta. The claims for compensation in connection with the Hawthorn accident are being heard by the Arbitration Board and the Supreme Court. In all the cases yet decided small damages have been awarded.

The Steam Navigation Board lately held an enquiry into the stranding of the ship Berengaria. The point was raised that tbe Board was powerless to deal with certificates, as the ship sustained no damage. The question was submitted to the Attorney-General, and bis opinion upholding the objection, the proceedings ceased. An elephant, brought from Calcutta for the Zoological Gardens, has been safely landed. He will be trained to carry children in the Gardens. Richard Hart, of Sandhurst, was being arrested by Constable Zolland for horsestealing,when he turned round, fired at the constable with a revolver but just missed him, and was secured before he discharged the other barrel. It is believed the prisoner is related to Steve Hart of Kelly gang notoriety. Hicken and Miller have agreed to box for £SOO a-side.

Ismary, Hirsob and Co., agents for the Westinghousa brake, bare written a letter to the Secretary for Railways charging the Locomotire Superintendent with bias in tbe recent contest, and also with uniform incivility to them. The success of the loan is a topic of general congratulation.
