THE INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION

The Committee of the Industrial Association met last evening in the Council Chambers. Present—Mr _E, Wakefield (President), Mr J. Watkins, (Vice-President) ; Messrs Duval, Evans, Goodall, Haggett, Noble, O’Bryan, Watson, Shirtcliffe, Roberts, Palliser, Dr Lovegrove, T. Turnbull (hon Sec.) SECRETARY. Nine applications were received for the post of Secretary, and Mr Benjamin J. Lane was appointed, and was authorised in conjunction with the President to secure an office at a maximum rental of £25 per annum. Mr R. Turnbull, M.H.R., and Mr T. Turnbull, hon sec., were elected life members, and the meeting cordially acknowledged their valuable services in initiating the movement. FISH PRESERVING. Mr T. Turnbull advocated attention being paid to the fishing industry, with a view to preserving and exporting the same. He produced a tin of groper which had been preserved by Mr Balfour, manager of the N.Z. Meat Preserving Co.’s works at Washdyke, and which, on trial, p.xoved to be sweet and excellent. Mr Palliser expressed his belief that there were oyster beds on this coast. Mr Goodall did not think this, but he warmly advocated preserving the groper. The President suggested the appointment of a Sub-Committee to take this matter up, and satisfy themselves as to the regularity of the fish supply, A Committee was thereupon appointed, consisting of Messrs Watkins, Goodall, Turnbull, and O’Bryan. CORN AND STARCH. The Vice-President (Mr Watkins) produced some corn preparation of his own, being a sample of wheat “corn flour” in lieu of maizena, and some blanc mange made from this. He also exhibited comparative specimens of starch, and gave a detailed account of preparations that might bo made from corn. Messrs Watkins, Noble, Haggett and Dr Lovegrove were appointed a Committee to prepare an exhaustive paper on corn flour and starch. After several suggestions had been made in a conversational way the meeting terminated. 1
