ATHLETIC TOURNAMENT. A largo and enthusiastic audience assembled in the pit last night, the stalls and circle being very thinly occupied. The great feature of the performance was a set-to ” between Slade and Jem Mace, in which the astonishing powers of the Timaru champion were well exhibited. Slade’s career as a ' pugilist will undoubtedly be a very successful one, as he has acquired perfect mastery over himself, and a thoroughly scientific style. Another set-to between Mace and Belcher, a well-known Christchurch sporting man was also well received. Mr Patten enlivened the proceedings with the piano.
