A GAGGED EDITOR.
A writ having been applied for in the Supreme Court of Queensland, calling on Mr Thaddeus O’Kane, of the “ Northern Miner,” to show cause why he should not be committed for contempt of Court, that paper came out with the following, enclosed in a coffin-shaped black border, over the leader:—
“ R.I.P.— ‘ The Northern Miner ’ having been gagged, and the liberty of the Press on Charters Towers having been destroyed, correspondents and others are informed, that no articles, letters, advertisements, or other communications, in prose or verse, can be published in the ‘ Northern Miner ’ which comment in any way on the public acts of public men, judges, lawyers, Civil servants, priests, parsons, councillors, aldermen, batchers, bakers, or candlestickmakers, rat-catchers, rogues, or vagabonds. No ventilation, of or discussion on, public grievances can be allowed. The redress of grievances has passed to other hands. On all things and on all men there must be silence. The liberty of the Press no longer exists on Charters Towers, and some other means must be found for the redress of grievances.—T. O' Kane, Gagged Editor ‘ Northern Miner.’ ”
