THE OTAGO RUNS.
Referring to Mr Stout’s appointment to the Land Board, the Dunedin “ Star ” says :—“ He is, beyond all doubt, for many excellent reasons, the right man in the right place, and the Government have acted most judiciously in availing themselves of his services. We shall await with interest the course he may adopt with regard to the runs and otherwise.” It then goes on to comment on the various modes of dealing with the runs proposed, and points out that the exports of wool in 1880 were to the value of £3,169,300, of which more than one third was from Otago, “ This,” it says, “ is not an interest to be trifled with ; and those who assume to be statesmen, would do well to consider the economic bearings of the question as affecting this Provincial district and the colony at large.” In conclusion, it points out that “ There seems to be some misapprehension in regard to the disposal by immediate sale or on deferred payments of that portion of the present runs which it is not intended to
re-let for depasturing purposes. It is proposed to place these lands in the market at once, so soon as they are surveyed. The Waste Lauds Board will have discretionary power as to when they will be offered for sale. The pastoral deterred payment sections are to be put up to auction not earlier than November or December, 1882. There should, therefore, bn ample time to duly advertise the sales iu the Horae country if that is thought to be expedient."
