LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT.
The Christchurch Opera Company had a good house last night to hear “La Filie de Madame Angot,” and the patronage was fully deserved by the successful manner in which this capital opera, a favorite wherever produced, was given. The music for the chief characters had the fullest justice done to it by the excellent voices and complete mastery of their parts by Mdlle Navaro, Miss Le Gassick, and Messrs Edmonds, Ritchie, and Fox, and the minor parts were all very carefully and spiritually sung and played. Mdlle Navaro gained an enthusiastic encore for her splendid singing of “ Tis all I care to hear,” and repetitions of other portions of the opera were demanded. The character of the whole performance reflects the greatest credit upon the conductor, Mr H. F. Towle, to whose skill and industry the high pitch of excellence to which his amateur friends have reached is chiefly due. Indeed no one would suppose if the fact were not known, that the capital rendering of the opera last night was given by amateurs, with the exception of Mdlle Navaro. “ La Filie de Madame Angot” will, by special request, be repeated this evening and we can assure our readers who did not hear it last night, that it is well worth going to hear, —those who were there do not need that assurance.
