DISASTER TO THE GANYMEDE.
SECOND EDITION
Our readers will hear with regiet that the barque Ganymede, belonging to our townsman, Mr A. White, met with a serious mishap after .leaving Timaru. She cast off from the wharf here on Saturday week, bound for Newcastle, and encountered rough weather in Foveaux Straits. She ran for comparative shelter to the lee of Stewart’s Island where she lay-to. The ballast —loose shingle taken from the beach here—shifted during the night of the 22nd, through the rolling of the vessel, till it was all on one'side of the keel, and the vessel was thrown on her beam ends. In order to right her it was found necessary to cut away her topmasts, and this having eased her, renewed efforts to trim the ballast were successful, the vessel being got upright again, and such sail made as was possible for Port Chalmers. She was sighted from the Heads and a tug despatched to tow her into port. Besides the loss of her topmasts and jibhoom, two of her boats were swamped in an endeavor to launch them, and the long-boat was swept off the deck, with the chocks she Jay on, though the latter were bolted to the deck. There were several passengers on board, and'it is gratifying to hear that they speak, highly of the conduct of Captain Morgan and his crew under such trying circumstances.
