An American advertising agent offered the owner of the celebrated American racer, Crickmore, £IOOO to re-christen the animal “ St. Jacob’s Oil 1 '
The thousand yards swimming championship of Scotland was, on 23rd September, a second time competed for in the Dundee baths. E. Bertram won, in 17min, 6sec.; H. Fox second, by eight seconds ; A. Mollison, the previous winner, third. At the Scottish sports in New York, recently, a man named McLennan threw the 101 b hammer 285 feet, and the 51b hammer 330 feet. Brasseau cleared 6 feet 1 inch in a running high jump, and 21 feet in a running long jump. These are among the best records in the world.
Archer, the celebrated jockej, scored three great wins—the Great Yorkshire Handicap, the St. Leger, and the Portland Plate, at the Doncaster meeting. His horsemanship is described as marvellous, his races all being won in the last furlong. The sums of money he received as presents represented several thousand pounds. Lord Arlington gave him £2OOO to ride Bend Or in the Cambridgeshire and win.

Blair Athol did not run as a two-year-old.
