TIMAEU—THIS DAY. (Before K. Beetham, Esq., R.M.) A QUESTION OF TONGUES. Charles Kotepahi. a Native, was brought np on remand, charge! with stealing a watch from the person of a man named Cox at Tetnuka. Inspector Pender said the accused professed to be unable to thoroughly undeistand English, and an interpreter would be necessary. Mr Beetham said he would be willing to interpret, butas the case must be heard before him as Resident Magistrate, he could not hear the case and interpret too. He held a short conversation in Maori with the prisoner, and ascertained that he denied the charge and that he had no friends in this neighborhood, he belonging to the north of Auckland. He said he had been working at a flour mill in Terauka a few months. He was remanded to the 3rd January to enable the police to procure an interpreter. LARCENY OF WOOL, Isaac Curtis, charged on remand with stealing two bags of wool, was further remanded till January 3, to enable him to prepare his defence, bail being allowed, himself in h bond of £25, and one surety to the same amount.
