Turf Notes.

(By "Early Bird.") Interest in the forthcoming race-meeting continues to grow apace, and thns early it can be remarked .that given fine weather on the day the success of the meeting is practically assured. I understand that the nominations received for ihe various events have, numerically speaking, exceeded expectations, "while the class engaged is surprisingly good. Quite a number of horses have been working out oil the local track, and one morning last week found the "track watchers" lined up in large force, to view the work. There was a big muster of horses, but the majority were restricted to easy pacing and slow work, only half-a-dozen or so being set against the watch, . An unnamed chestnut gelding was- the first to go fast, running five furlongs, without doing his best, in fair time. A poii} r named Hops also, went a fast five furlongs, and promises to be pretty smart over short courses. The 'Awk was sent a round at a strong pace, finishing np his task well; he will strip a very fit horse on the 29th. Absolute, a roan gelding, was given plenty of work, but not being in generous mood, would not do his best.

Mokigi showed plenty of dash and finished very strongly after a solid round. Radium set the heads nodding when she stepped on the tiack. Jumping off smartly, she galloped a merry five furlong; her time being easily the best of the morning; she finished well, and on her showing will keep the best of the local horses moving. Star beat two companions pointless over five furlongs, showing plenty of pace. Flying Fox and Fiamoe, fkiished the last work, both iprinting wdl.

As the day of the meeting draws nearer,.-trainers will be indulging their charges in more fast work, and the doiugs on the track next week can be expected to be more interesting. Some pretty smart hacks are engaged in the Plantation Handicap and I am told that whatever beats the Fasitoo representative will prove the winner. Nominations for all events will be published in the Samoa Times next week.
