Obituary.
MISS MARIE CARRUTHERS, On the 9th iust. a wireless was received from Auckland by Mrs. Jessop, that her sister Marie Carruthers, had passed away. By the s.s. " Talune " which arrived here on Friday (Aug. 22nd) a detailed account of her death was received by her sorrowing relations and friends. On the 2nd of August Miss Marie Carruthers was taken suddenly ill and conveyed to the Auckland Hospital, where she received every medical attention, the doctors on two occasions using the ex-rays, but could not locate what was the trouble. She passed away on Friday night (August 8), Mrs, Hetherington beiug with her when she died. The doctors afterwards held a post-morten examination, the result of which had not been given out, up to the time of the steamer leaving for the Islands. She was. buried at the Waikumete Cemetery, on Monday the 11th, the funeral cortege leaving Messrs. C. Little & Sons (undertakers) at 1.30 p.m. There was a large gathering of her
friends to follow the remains to their last resting place, Samoa being well represented, the pall bearers being Messrs, J- Gardiner, G. Greig, Pauiani, Tauvela, W? Stowers, Maa and J. A. Westbrook. In addition to the large number of friends who attended the funeral, many beautiful wreaths and letters'of condolence were received from those who were unable to be present.
Marie Carruthers was the third daughter of the late Richard Hetherington Carruthers, Esq., barrister and solicitor, and a former magistrate of Samoa, and at the time of -her decease was in iier
25tli year. For some years she was in the employ of Mr. Mason Mitchell, the American Cousul at Apia, doing office work She left Samoa about 3 years ago, tor Auckland, to study shorthand and stenography.
Miss Carruthers was to be married shortly to Mr. J. Gardiner, and was waiting for her sister Carrie, who was expected to arrive in Auckland by the return Taluue, where her fiahce was waiting for her, and possibly to make a double event of two weddings.
Not far from Marie Carruthers' resting place in the Waikumete Cemetery, are the graves of Walter and Caroline Johnston.
The funeral was attended by practically all Samoa residing in Auckland, and many other friends. G.W.
