Women's Institutes

MATAKANA

The usual monthly meeting of the above Women's Institute was held in Mafcakana on Thursday, Feb. 20th. The meeting opened with singing of "Comrades and Friends." A roll call on "How I spent Xmas" was quite good. Misw Lorna Morrison, who lias just recently returned from India, gave a very interesting talk on work done by Indian men and women. She had a marvellous display of embroidery, basket ware, silver, horn, ivory, etc., which was much admired. A special effort is to be made at a "bring and buy" stall for the next meeting to collect funds for the local Soldiers' Gift Club.

Competitions for the month were as follow :: —Flowers, Victorian posy, Mrs Eoke 1, Mrs Lewis Meiklejohu 2, Mrs Tucker 3 ; cooking, plum jam, Mrs Campbell 1, Mrs Roke 2; Miss Gomiie Mtiikltijohu 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mestlames Withers and Watson. A vary pleasant afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem. LEIGH There was a very good attendance at the monthly meeting of the above Women's Institute held in the Leigh Public Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 19th, Mrs A. J. Matheson presiding. The roll call was "An incident which occurred . during the holidays. Mrs T. Birdsall gave a very interesting talk on "The Power of Thought," which was much ap-

predated. A word competition was won l>y Miss N. Evans. Mrs M. Torkington contributed a reading. An animated discussion was held on whether flogging of criminals should be discontinued. Mesdarnes T. H. and H. Ashton were in charge of a well-filled trading stall.

The result of the points competitions was as follow ;—Flowers, Miss N. Ev.ans 1, Miss Ashton 2, Mrs Rogers 3 ; wholemeal scones, Miss P. Stoneham 1, Mrs H. Torkington 2, Mrs M. Torkington 3 ; paper mache work, Mrs Rogers 1. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Dunning, H. Torkint'fon and Williams. The singing of the ode coneluded a most enjoy«l'lu afternoon.
