Swimming Carnival

Successful School Fixture

The Wark worth District High School held a highly successful swimming carnival on Friday last,.when the school championships were decided. The .weather could hardly have been more suitable, and the races were watched hv many interested spectators —- pupils, parents and friends of the, school—whose generous support resulted in the school funds benefiting substantially.

The championship events were keenly contested and resulted as follows:-—

Senior Boy—Owen Eees Senior Girl —Marjorie Holden Junior Boy —Trevor Kees Junior Girl—Barbara Shaw and Nola Williams.

Officials for the day were :—Starter, Mr G. H. Percy ; judges, Messrs J.Morrison and J. B. Rushworth; record steward, Miss 0. M. Clist; marshals, Mr W. H. Salmon, Misses L. Lawrie, J. H. Mascull and W..1. Macgregor; announcer, Mr H. J. Keys ; timekeeper, Mr B. L. Eees ; gatekeeper, Mr R. Ellis.

A particularly sporting action marked the swimming of the junior championship. One competitor, through no fault of his own, arrived late for one of the relative events. When informed of this, the hoy in the lead for points at the time willingly agreed to re swim the race. Incidentally, although defeated upon the second occasion, he proved hie worth by clipping three seconds from his original time for the event.

One of the most popular events of the day was the "awkward entry." Several competitors managed to make what the judges described sotto voce as "the neatest dive of the day so far," hiit one or two were able' to enter the .water all asprawl, making a most satisfying splash.

The thanks of parents, pupils and teachers are due to Mr Hall for the donation of two heavy spars to act as a foundation for the diving platform, and to those who gave assistance iu.transporting the logs and erecting the staging..
