Repairing Storm Pam age
A large amount of work wasnecessary in the Port Albert district to repair the damage done by the recent flood and storm. Communication by telephone was not restored until Thursday and Friday as^ every line was broken, in many instances in several places. Whilst the orchards have not suffered as heavily as those in other districts, the damage is serious and the result will be feit for years' The greatest damage is that caused by young trees (principally Granny.Smith) being biown over.' These have to be staked and usually take several years to recover their full vigor and never do as well as trees that were notblown over. The estimates of the fruit blown off vary from's to 15 per cent., and the variety that suffered most was Granny .Smith. Most farmers have had to spend the week sawing up arid clearing away fallen trees, ancl in repairing broken fences aud; sheds,, Some of the hay was saved and further areas are still being cutfor hay. '■"''' Main Road. The main road between Port Albert ahdWellsford has become very pot-holey as a result of the wet, summer and heavy traffic,. and it is hoped that 4-epairs will be carried out before^t becomes much worse, v At present the Eod-ne-y County Council's quarry atMt. Bram c is engaged in crushing" nietal for the, main highway atWharehirie and for Worker's Access road at Wellsford.
