MATAKANA DEFEATS

WARKWORTH THREE GOALS

TO ONE,

On the local ground, on Saturday last, instead of Matakana having an easy time, Warkworth kept them fully extended, and the scores were even till the retirement of T. Ramsbottom in the second half. Captain Thomson had his usual luck iv the choice of positions, and Matakana defended the western goal. Shortly after bully off the reds found two full stops in M. Philips and H. Langridge, the former was especially good right throughout the game. Give and take play of fairly fast order ensued till Jones at left wing centred, Hugh Thomson shot for goal and Warkworth's keeper missed it, and Hugh who followed his hit tapped it iv. Incursions from tarritory to territory added nothing further to the score, until U. Warm after a good run, just put the ball under Matakana's bar, and the equality thus gained was maintained .to the end of the first half. On resuming, each aide put their best efforts forward, AVarkworth losing some advantage in the throw in play. When the spell was about half through, a hot shot from one of Matakana's fullback oaught T. Ramsbottom in the left eye The injured player was removed, and* Warkworth proceeded one man short' preferring to keep to the rules rathe r than accept the offer of the Matakan a captain to permit another player t° take Ramsbottbm's place.' Both tho previous pace and the loss told on the yellow and blacks. From a corner hit. Matakana obtained another goal rather easily. Warkworth livened up and looked dangerous at times. An attaok by Matakana's van found the expression they desired when Joe Vipond put a hot shot through. Led by Warm, Warkworth's van swept down the field, but the danger was averted, and the whistle blew leaving Matakana victors by 3 to 1.

Mr McGechie fulfilled the duties of refoioe.

Considering the number of new players in Warkworth team, the local men did real well and the game was statediby the onlookers to quite equal the one of the week proceeding.
