NEW ANAESTHETIC FOUND.

Dr. Gwathmay, an anaesthetist at' the Skin and Cancer Hospital, New York, has discovered a new method of administering chloroform and ether, reducing vthe risk of death to nil, and eliminating the after-nausea in ninety per cent, of the cases. The method, which has recently been used in 6000 cases in a number of h'osoitals in the United States, consists in passing the anaesthetic through water warmed slightly above blood heat before administering it to the patient. The water removes certain impurities, mainly aldehyde, which tend to cause nausea,' whilst the anaesthetic, being «f the temperature of the body when in-haled, does not cause any shock to the system as produced by the old method of breathing cold ether and chloroform. All patients can be made completely unconscious in five minutes without seriously affecting the kidneys, heart or lungs.
