Tauranga, July 9 An application for a liquor license at Matawata in place pf a licensedropped at Maketu by non-payment of the amount of the fee, came before the Licensing Committee. The case has aroused considerable public interest on account of the method adopted making it possible to transfer a license more than one mile. Mr Reed, K. O. of Auckland, with Mr H A Sharp appeared for the applicant, A. Montgomery, and seven other legal gentlemen represented the various parties. Mr Reed, in a long opening address; pointed out the grpat need for additional accommodation at Matamata, and stressed the advantage of having licensed premises under the control of the Licensing Committee instead of the present method of obtaining liquor in bulk fiom outside districts, with its attendant evils. There are some sixteen witne ses to examine and the hearing will no doubt be protracted.
