Per Press Assosiation Christchurch, March 23 A Belgian woman named Jane Beck was brought rather sharply to recogl nition of the requirements of New Zealand’s alien registration laws by being brought before Mr McCarthy, 3.M, in the Magistrate’s Court today charged with being an alien who, being required to be registered under the Registration of Aliens Act, 1917, failed to make application for { registration within the time and in the manner prescribed by that Act. Senior-Sergeant Cummings , said I the defendant stated that she thought it was unnecessary to register as an alien ’in the ordinary way, as she was a Belgian, and Belgium was an Ally! A great number of unregistered I aliens were still in New Zealand, ; and.the Government Statistician was very anxious to have them registered He had ordered the prosecution merely to give publicity to the need for registration, and asked for only a nominal penalty’ There was no suggestion that the defendant had endeavoured to evade registration The magistrate; You must understand that all who are not Britishers are required to register.
