MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held yesterday. Present: Crs Sir James G Wilson (in the chair). HH Hunt, J Boyce, A S Penny, W J Phillips, and H G Hammond.

Leave of absence was granted Or Barber.

- Correspondence was dealt with from—

N. Z. Railways, forwarding paid on charges for tram, £44 4s 9d. Valuation Department, forwarding subsidy, £1875. Public Trust, approving of portion of loan of £30,000 tor additions to tramway, and road making machinery, etc.

Valuation Department, pointing out that Council had no grounds for complaining of charge of £l7l 4s or 2s Cd per assessment for revising properties on valuation roll. Customs Department, stating that Council’s application for removal of duty on dump trucks would receive consideration. Commissioner Crown Lands, asking Council to furnish an estimate of probable coat of forming streets in Tangimoana township, and asking if Council would undertake the work —The Clerk and Mr Darragh, chairman Rongotea Town Board, to interview the Commissioner of Lands.

Public Works Department, stating £250 for erecting Mangawhafca road bridge would be used when deta ilod plana and specifications were submitted and approved. District Health Officer, suggesting improvements to abate nuisance at Glen Oroua School—Wanganui Education Board to be informed that Council considers that in the interests of the children’s health a proper septic tank should be installed immediately. District Surveyor, asking that survey blocks on Feilding-Awahuri-Palmerston road be taken care of.

Mayor of Feilding, asking Council to appoint delegates to attend a conference on March 19th to discuss a reading scheme for the district—Crs Barber and Penny appointed. Town Clerk Foxton Borough Council, asking Council’s opinion as to advisability of these two Councils, with Shannon Borough Council, forming a Hydro-electric Board— Matter to be considered.

Kairanga County Council, asking support of resolution that Hospital Board be asked to allow any patients to have, if they desire it, the services of the medical attendant in charge of case prior to admission— Council regarded scheme as impracticable Rongotea Town Board, asking for £l9, part cost of peace celebrations. Sluggish River Board, asking Connell to do its share in clearing willows on lower reaches of Oroua river—Notice to be served on .ratepayers along right bank of river from Rangiotu to Manawatu river, to cut down and remove willows.

N H Knight, drawing attention to unsatisfactory state of Bickford’s Line, and complaining of cows being turned out on road, a nuisance which affected his cream placed at the gate for collection —The Engineer Reported that the road was all right, and the Clerk was instructed to write and ask that the nuisance be abated.

RESOLUTIONS. It was resolved— That the following tenders be accepted :—Metalling contract 262, W Gust, 8s 8d per cubic yard; 263, Hurst and Claasen, 4s; dog collars, W J Peacock, 800 at Is each. Or Hunt—Phillips—That Council authorise raising a special loan of £2OOO for erection of workers’ dwel2 lings, loan to be for J36>£ years at Per cent per annum. First year’s interest to be paid out of loan. Crs Hammond—Hunt—That the roadman’s wages be increased to 12s per day. Crs Penny—Phillips—That J O Clarke be appointed registrar of dogs, with power to appoint subcollectors : Fee 2s 6d for sh eep and cattle dogs, and 10s for others.
