LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
One of the most generous gifts made to the returned soldiers of New Zealand has come from Mr George Rutherford, of Waitohi Peaks, North Canterbury. Mr Rutherford has sold his property to the Government for a soldiers’ settlement at a price that means a clear gift to the soldier settlers of £35,000, or more.
The station consists of 12,000 acres, and Mr Rutherford has refused £9 per acre for "the land. One of the leading station agents in the city states that a conservative estimate of the value of the property, if placed upon the market to-day, would be £lO per acre. The owner of the property has sold it to the Government for £6 10s per acre. The estate will be cut up into a number of runs.
