Remits that special inducements should be offered to qualified men to lake up the teaching profession in the State schools and that better facilities be given to backblock settlers for getting to school and good teachers were adopted. Remits carried dealing with the necessity for providing better financial provision for settlors to develop their holdings, included a recommendation that the Government be urged to vote largo sums to the Advances to Settlers Department, and that a State agricultural bank should be established by the Government. “ A remit by the Provincial Executive expressing dissatisfaction with the railway administration emphasising that the Government should adopt a more progressive policy both with regard to the pushing ou of the new railways and the adoption of more up-to-date methods of administration so that the needs and conveniences of the public should receive consideration, was adopted. A remit passed at last Conference, “that farmers should have their own ships and eventually dispose of their own produce, ’ ’ was affirmed. Remits dealing with the menace of the Meat Trust wore adopted as follows: That iu view of the Meat Trust menace, it shall be illegal for any freezing works to be sold except with the sanction of the Government, sanction for the sale to be given only after it is proved that the purchaser is in no way acting or connected with the Meat Trust, tho onus of proof to rest upon the purchaser; thst tho Government bo requested to see that legislation is provided at next session of Parliament on seven heads as recommended by a Parliamentary Committee in order to keep meat and shipping trusts from operating in New Zealand. The Conference also carried a remit that the Government be "urged to remove the requisition Zealand produce at an early a date as possible. Mr J. Bcddie was re-elected president. A HIGHWAY MEMORIAL. Auckland, May 30. The Farmers’ Provincial Union endorsed the proposal to construct a highway from the North Capo to Invercargill as n peace memorial, suggesting connections with oast and west and suitable pillars iu each district as a memorial to fallen soldiers.
