AMUSEMENTS

THE CHEEROS. A CLEVER COMBINATION. Under (he able direction of Mr Bentley Russell and Mr A. E. Orozier, the members of this clever combination have made such rapid strides in the chorus and preliminary work of the bright and spark.ling operetta which tney are staging early in April, that the management considered that it was|[time that they made their advent on the Town Hall stage in order to fget to the “business” part of the performance. As the charges for rehearsals are fairly stiff, a deputation, ccpsisting of Messrs A. Way, N. M. *Mao' dongall, H. Sherriff and R Stevens, waited on the Borough Council last evening and asked for a reduction in the pflea ot rehearsals. As it would be necessary to hold about twelve rehearsals before the operetta was staged, said Mr Way, and the performance was booked for two nights, the hire of , the hall would emounfc to £lB. It was impossible to show the improvement that was desired in the Coronation Hall (which the Rangilikei County Council had very generously given the Oheeroa the use of), as there was not sufficient room for the fiftyfonr performers to move about. The Mayor was very sympathetic, and stated that as there was no quorum tney could not give a final decision, but advised the Cheeros to apply for a rebate. Or, Hunter considered that the Cheeros were a great advantage to the town from an educative point of view, and also in providing entertainment for the residents. Or. Wilson stated that, after hearng the arguments of the deputation, he was in favour of conceding their wishes, nut unfortunately they bad no power as the present meeting was constituted. The deputation thanked the Major and Councillors for the manner in which they had been received, and stated that they would, as suggested by the Mayor, apply later for a rebate.
