FIRE BRIGADES DEMONSTRATION AT TAIHAPE.

The demonstration of tho United Districts’ Fire Brigades opened at Taihape on Saturday. When it was decided some two-- mouths ago that Taihape was to have the demonstration it was thought that at least eighteen brigades would compete, hut, unfortunately, only eleven saw lit to send representatives. The programme of events included ladder raced m>’.u), hose hydrant and union (5 men), coupling champion sliip (Imaa), baby rescue (2 men), hose, reel and ladder (5 men), and hose and hydrant (3 men) and coupling championship (2 men'). Ot these competitions the first three were got oft and the remainder, besides various other items were set down for Monday. The Hasting men have so far shown the best form, securing two out of the three events decided, whilst the otner Hawke's Bay team, Napier, appropriated tho third. The weather during tho previous twenty-four hours had been particularly wet, but Saturday broke tine although dull r.nd by "midday the ground had dried and was in good order. The attendance was somewhere about -100 but this must he considered satisfactory when it is taken into account that all places of business were open and most people were content to wait for the final day. All events were got off promptly and although in one case a protest was entered this was soon dealt with and the programme was not subjected to any delay. The Demonstration Secretary, Mr W. H.
