TURAKINA NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent. The first meeting of the ladies Red Cross Society for the present year was held in'the manse on Wednesday afternoon. The attendance was small, hut a start was made vith the work”and sewing ITnaterial'seftt out to absent members to finish in their homes. A parcel was made up of articles received as follows:—20 towels, six sheets, three head bandages, three pairs socks, 12 swabs, five jug covers, and one face cloth. The parcel was forwarded to headquarters in Wellington. Monthly subscriptions are being received from friends to provide material for sewing and knitting. The School Committee met on Saturday evening. The committee two months ago asked the Education Board if they would build a newconcrete school provided the carting of material was done free. A reply was received from the Board declining the offer. The Board have painted the school and renewed a few weather boards, and apparently think the present old building will do tor for another fifty years. Mr Thurston, headmaster, reported that the roll had increased to 84. The annual Harvest Thanksgiving Services were held in the Presbyterian Church last Sabbath morning and evening, and in Makohau school in the afternoon. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion with flowers, fruit, corn, maize and ' toi-toi grass, the effect being very pleasing. The Eev. J. Wilson conducted the services, the subject in the morning being “Sowing in Tears and Reaping with Joy,” and in the evening the subject was “Reasons for Praising God.” The choir “sang anthems at both services, and the hymns were in keeping with the occasion at all the three services." Thanksgiving collections were taken. The collections were liberal. The Valley congregation, with their usual generosity, contributed £l3 3s. The total for the two services in Turakina were £9 Is sd. As a rule, it is the same people who contribute to the church wiio also contribute- to the good work of the Red Cross and Y. M. 0. A. among thejj soldiers The managers of the church desire to thank all those who helped to make , the services a success.
