A SHOCKING FATALITY.
MAN CUT TO PIECES ON MAIM TRUNK LINE. —— ' A shocking fatality occurred afe Te Knifei at midnight on Friday, as the south hound mail train from Auckland was leaving the station on continuance of its journey, resulting in a man being cut to pieces. The man’s name was William Nash, 41 years of age, a discharged soldier, working at Kutaturu. From the story of an eye-witnses it appears that the victim, a passenger on the express, had left his [carriage at To Kuiti and made no attempt to re-hoard the train until it recommenced its journey. As the carriage reserved for the ladies went past ho grabbed tho railing and attempted to swing himself aboard, hut stepped into space, as there is only one entrance platform to these carriages, which are the old dining cars. His plight was witnessed by a. station employee, who grabbed the man but not hold him, and w: s in danger of being dragged under the traiu himself. The express was quickly stopped, but by this time it had passed over the unfortunate man, killing him instantly, his mangled remains lying under" tho wheels. It is alleged that deceased was under the influence of liquor, and bad been reprimanded by the guard for being a nuisance in the cjrriage bo occupied.
