MANGAWEKA NOTES.

It is reported tlwt Mr A. Fowler, who met with a serious accident through being thrown from a horse on Sunday morning last, is still in a rather grave condition, ami the possibility of unexpected internal troubles developing may yet have to be looked for.
Mr P. Noble had a narrow escape from a serious accident when driving liis motor lorry in from Ruahiue one day this week. While descending a steep hill near Mr Melrose’s property, pud of the brakes copuling gear broke, and the vehicle rapdily gained headway 'ml dashed down the hill with g| remendous speed. Mr Noble w sano to steer the runaway until at the bottom, when one of the wheels came off snd the lorry came to an enforced stop, with a broken axle. The total damages are heavy and .Mr Noble is the victim of a costly and unfortunate mishap. Heavy rain fell all over the district on Wednesday night and Thursday', as a result of which the roads in some places are loaded with, small slips. The potato,blight is reported as to he rather seveie in several puds of the Ruahiue-Rangiwahia district.
A reported case of scarlet fever has been under observation in Man - gaweka for some time past, but the complaint lias been confined to the one pitient, who was now practically recovered. There is a very heavy yield of plums in this locality this seisou, and one grower lus put it, “Wo cin’t give the beastly things away!” It is a curious fact, too, that the plums are being attacked iu many' cases by a strange disease of the skin which causes the fruit to assume a sickly greyish appearance, after'which it shrivels and falls off.

The patriotic tea stall was conducted on Thursday' by Vie ladies of Karowarewa, and splendid business was done all day. I’articulirs of the takings will he given later. A soldier well known locally, Lieut. C. Maye, is expected to arrive home within a few weeks. Ho is a son-in-law of Mr Burnett, of Kawhatau. "*
