LOSSES OF TRANSPORTS.
RESCUING DESTROYER ALSO SUNK. PRACTICAL .IMMUNITY OF TROOP CARRIERS. (Aust. and Cable Association.) London, Jan. JO. Two transports were lost between Ontranto and Alexandria. The drowned included four, nurses, destroyer was also lost while engaged in resene wo’dc. Both transports were included in the sinkings cabled on the 9th January. The larger oi' the two transports was the Pacific Mail Company’s Aragon, with 2000 aboard, including troops, nurses and medical staffs. The second vessel was the old Khbdival steamer Osmanieh witli 800 aboard. It is believed’that both vessels ran into a mineiicld, the disasters occurring within a few hours of each other.
It is interesting to note that during the War nine transports only have been lost with casualties aggregating 2000, while something like 11,000 000 effectives have been carried without a casualty. There have been close on a quarter of a million afloat on a single day.
