HALCOMBE NOTES.
From Our Own Correspondent. Wonl was received in Halcombo last week that Private C. Setgel, a young man who was bom and bred in this locality, bad boon wounded. Private Seigxl word vw;-b the 27ths, and had been in France some months. A brother, Private John Seigel, was killed on (jallipuli. These brothers in private life were all but inseparable, and where nuu was the other would sure to ' he. The wounded soldier i • a son of Mr O. Soigel, of Halcombo. An accident, winch mi gin; easilyhave . hoeu attended with serious results, happened to a motor bicycle and sidecar one day lass week. Mr T. Burko was driving Vml had with him a -returned soldier named Scolicld. There is an acute angle in the Halcomb'-MAri-on
just opposite Mr L. Hogg’s residence, and tins corner the vehicle failed to negotiate, with the result th-.t tho hike with its 10.-. d dashed into tho fence. Alter tho sort-out it was found that the fence had. suffered tho loist. The riders were considerably shaken and brnise.il, and the machine will require tho close attention of an export repairer .before it is of any use.
Considerable excitement prevailed at I-ialcombe during tho early part of lust week, it being reported that wo were to have a picture show on Thursday night, -ho rumour had got round somehow, and quite a fair number of people, some from a considerable di-tance, rolled up to
take part in tho mild dissipation They worn much disappointed, ho-svever, when they found that th o “mo ! 'ies” would not move that right. Now,-.report says, ,'v.:o arc toTuivo the show this week, but there is no definite nows. It.is h silly—not to say asinine—way of doing business, and the people whp - intend honouring our town with tho night’s entertainment would In’* well advised to in future publicly announce their intentions. A snu-ii advertisement in the Advocate would do more to fetch tho people in to the show than all tho rumours that wore over rumoured, besides which patrons v havo moro confidence in tho bona fades of the show notice which appears in tho press People who publicly announce their “goods’” have fi fur hotter chance of collecting cash than those who are. unable or ashamed to notify in the press what they h»ve got to offer. On Friday next the Halcombo Public School is to have the annual, picnic. Tho festivity is, lam given to understand, to bo field on our Kocroatiou Ground. This function is always looked forward to with pleasure by parents as well as pupils, and if the weather is lino no doubt there will fie a big crowd present. I am told there are to Jjbo adult competitions on tho racing track for tons of coal, 100’s of flour, boxes of tea. and various other commodities used in house keeping, so parents who have any sprinting abilities should not fail to make an effort to keep down the cost of living.
Harvesting operations are now in fall swing in this district, and though one lie irs occasion illy of a shortage of labour it docs not appear to be seriously interfering with the getting in of crops.
