MANGAWEKA NOTES.

From Or 11 Own Correspondent. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mangawok'i Scliooi Committee was held on Monday evening, there being present: Messrs A. H. Gascoigne (chairman), J. Amor, A. Dalxiell, H. S. Harris (secretary,) ami Rev. J. MeCaw.. There was little routine business to transact. Several small accounts were passed for payment, and it was auuouncoil'that the school would re-open on Fridav, February Ist. De-ding with the matter of"a school picnic, _ the committee c me to the decision that the time was not'opportuno for holding such a function. Several other matters of minor importance were 'discussed, ami the meeting adjourned a combined meeting of the School Committee, the Presbyterian Church Committee, and representatives of St. Martin’s Anglican Church, was held at the Presbyterian Church on Monday evening for the purpose of discussing a general picnic outing for local children. After lengthy discussion it was resolved that a Sunday School picnic he held in the Manse grounds, the fixing of the date of the function being loft in the hands of Rev. McCaw and Mr Gascoigne. A general invitation to all children who care to participate will he issued, and a hearty welcome extended to ail irrespective of denomination. Messrs W. Tollev, A- Aitken and Harris were appointed a Sports Committee to draft a programme ami carry it through. It was also decided to ask Misses W. Dalziell, F. Me Donah!, N. Dawkins and Tolley to act ns a Committee in order to raise funds tor general picnic requirements. It is hoped to make the outing a large and in every way enjoyable one, particularly as the children have h-d nothing of the kind for some years. Help of any kind will be grontly appreciated, especially cash. Ami an named A. Fowler, manager for Mr W. Anderson, To Kapua Road, met with n very painful accident about 10.30 on Sunday morning. He was riding up the steep hill just, above the Presbyterian Manse, when Ins horse suddenly reared and commenced bucking. The rider was unprepared for the move, and was thrown very he vily, the position ofhis injuries suggesting that lie struck the hmk with Ins head, and was then hurled down on his left side. Mr .1. Carver w ;i s t!ic first on the scene, ami found Fowler in on unconscious condition. Other help \vas rapidly at hand, ami retoration applied, after which the injured man was conveyed by c-r to the hotel, where he was. attended to by Dr. Dowling. Investigation showed that no hones were broken, but the sufferer had been terribly shaken and bruised. His escape from very serious consequences is almost a miracle, for the sudden whirling of the horse hurled him twenty feet or so down a steep and rough bank. In one place a large block of papa whs smashed to pieces with the impact of his body. Until further notice the local stock sales will he held fortnightly. Very heavy entries are announced for the sale next Thursday, and some good business is in prospect. The electric, light which has been playing various pranks during the past month or two, has a habit of going who'ly or partially on strike when required for the Sunday evening services at the local churches. Last Sunday when the devotions began worshippers waited patiently for the “coming of the light,’’ hut there was no light, and evoutuall y there was a hurried raid for the faithful old kerosene lamps. Inquiries next day elicited the fact that the stoppage was not due to anything that could have been avoided, as the engineer wss busy putting in some highly necessary ro-p-.ir parts, with the help", of assistance which lie iiad been unable to procure through the week-days. The wonder is, though, that housekeepers are not warned when something of the kind is pending. _ A notice on the Town Board office would do away with a great deal of inconvenience.

Private M. Byrne, of this town, who lias been very seriously wounded in Franco, and who lias spent, some months in hospital, is expected to arrive home within a d.-y or two.
