KIWITEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. The mouthy meeting of the Kiwitea County Council was held last night. Present: Ora: A. E. Pearce, Chairman, A. P. Francis, W. P. Lewis, J. J. Bryce, L. T. McLean, and C. Mclntyre. Apologies were received from Crs. W. P. Shaw and R. A, Gower. CORRESPONDENCE. From Public Works Department, forwarding report of Commission on the apportionment of cost of maintenance of Gorge road and bridges. Received. From Kairanga County Council, requesting Council to support resolution urging the Government to reduce railway freight on roadmakmaterials.—Decided to support. • From Mr A. E. Rule, applying for a transfer of slaughter license to E. Galbraith. —Granted. From Mr E, Beckett, applying for permission to erect a fence on roacUine; also to erect two gates across roadway, Marsh ill village. From Mr C. F. Moses, complaining of damage to cycle caused by collision with a cow wandering on ro.ul in Kangiwabia township.
ENGINEER’S REPORT.
Owing to the holiday season and generally unfavourable weather work has not progressed as well ns usual. Several heavy downpours have occurred and "considerable damage done to the ro id surfaces by the overflow. The teams have been pdebing roads in the vicinity of Kuuboltou but the scarcity of suitable labour is keenly felt in this connection. One team goes to Rungiwahii this week end to commence metalling the main road, the ro dman being charge. The grader was out on Kimbolton road for two days during the past fortnight mkl good work was done. -s suitable weather presents itself this work will bo pushed forward, wntertables throughout the County being in need of attention from this machine. Cheltenham Riding. —Onl ina ry maintenance work has been cirried out by the ro nlmau. Roads generally are in fair order. The roadman now has a horse and dray and is pitching as required. Kiwi tea Riding.—Roads in t his riding are in fair order, The motor traffic for the holiday season combined with the wet weather did considerable harm to the newly metalled part of Kimbolton road. The damage irs been repaired by the grader and the motallliug wilt continue. Waiiuna and Otago Ridings Ordinary maintenance work has continued during the mouth. One team will be sent to Waituna at an early date to do some necessary metalling on Sinclair’s Lino. Kimbollton. Riding.—The valley road is breaking up badly and will need attention in the way of metalling before the winter sets in. The Wd ter tables on Fowler’s hill will be cleared out by the grader at an early date. The main road has been patched rs required. Peep-o’-Day Riding.—Flood waters did considerable damage to the roads around Peep-o’-Day. Slips were numerous and the' overflow from watertables scoured out the metal outlie roads. The ford at the Kiwitea stream silted up and was impassable but has now* been, cleared. The running slip on the Pakihiknra side of the river lias again encroached on the road, and instructions have been given to clear same. Fakihikuru- Ridiug. —Mangatikei road lias been metalled and thestones are being broken and raked in. has been repairer* and Otari Hill will now be put in order. The-specifications for Mangamako metalling should be hero any mail, when tenders will be culled at once. Rangi walvia H idiiig. —Msngarimu and Pukerimu bill suffered considerably during* the recent wef weather and instructions have been given- tO'have the damage attended to: The-main street metalling will commence on Monday next. Hautnpu' Riding.—The Kawlntu roads recently metalled still remain rough owing principally to sheep traffic.. Improvements have been effected at corners near breast work close to Wilson’s flat. Upper Kawhatau roads are all in good order.
Lower Kawhatau-road is in fair order but requiries a little patching between Baitoy Bros, ami Titirangi road. M-angawharariki roid is in good order excepting on Sullivan’s Hill- vfherre the surface is very rough. All other roads are in fmorder. BUSINESS TRANSACTED. Instructions wore given the Engineer to.prepare estimates of quantities of metal required on the routs throughout the County. Soma discussion took place with regard to the grazing of stock ou the roads. The matter arose out of a particular ose referred to lest mouth. Ifr was decided to inform the ratepayer that permitting stock to graze on the roads rendered him liable to prosecution. “The time is not far diet mV* remarked the Ch.urman, “when we shall have to consider the making of concrete roads, or some other improvements. ” The Council decided to support the proposal of tho Kairanga County Council that the Government should be asked to'reduce tho railway freights on roadmaking materials. The engineer was instructed to arrange for the necessary supply of horse feed. The following sales of grass seed wero approved:—Auputa road, L. Readier, las; Slain Road nc ir Pearson’s, Buahinc, F. Pearson, ss; part of .Ohingaiti-Pembejtou roul. L. Bryce. 10s; Bluff road and Moore’s slip, B. Horo. 10s; part of Stormy Point, J, C. Petersen, ££l; Mangapipi road, J. L. S tuart, £5; Kiwitoi-Tapum roul.d. Hall, 3s fid. The tender of W. Peters for the supply of dog collars was accepted. In reference to Mr Beckett sap plication, it was decided to secure, farther information as to locality.
