Members of the local lire brigade are at present practising night and morning in anticip-ition of the demonstration being hold hero during Easter week. The necessity of having all the streets in :lio borough named caused a great deal of discussion at the last meeting of the Borough Council. His Worship the Mayor said it was time there was some uniformity in the naming of streets. Some boro two names and were not officially named at all. He suggested that the names of streets should commemorate something in connection with the present war.. Councillor Johlin considered that they might ho mimed after some of the pioneers of the town, suen as Nathan Street and McLennan Street. These men had worked hard for the town, and he was sure that this proposal would meet with the approval of the townspeople. Councillor Turnbull said a lot of the streets boro the names of native birds. Ho did not think the list had been exhausted. Finally on the suggestion of the Mayor, Crs. Johlin, Healy, Turnbull and Dashwood wore appointed a committee to consider the matter and report at tiie next meeting of the Council. How Lieutenant Lionel M. Dixon, of Taihape, won his Military Cross ii\ October last, is described in a Homo paper thus:—“As well as commanding the Company with marked success in the heavy lighting of that week, Lieut. Dixon took in hand a machine- gun that was working destruction among his men. He rushed forward, captured the gun, and killed those in charge before returning to his Company. Thou, without waiting for orders, ho led his men into a hsd breach in the line and thus averted a general break.” His actions were described as most gallant, daring and brave. Mushrooms are already fairly plentiful in some parts of this district.
