MARTON SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT
The breaking up entertainment of tho Marton State School took place in tho Town Hall last night and, as was natural, attracted a large attendance, nearly every seat being occupied. An overture by' Mr Holder’s orchestra followed the singing the National anthem by the audience, and this was succeeded by the exceedingly pretty and picturesque oporett i, “Daisy' Darling’s Dream. ’ ’ The manner in which it was carried through was not only' a proof of tho intelligence and adaptability of the children to their role, but was eloquent of skilful and painstaking service on tho part of those who trained them. It went without a hitch, the children s:-ng as if they' eujoyd it as much as the audience, and tho marching, dancing and figure movements were excellently' well dune. In a part of tho programme in which there were so many children engaged it would bo invidious to select any' for special mention. ' very laughable interlude was introduced in the shape of a blindfolded boxing contest for boys in which tho holders of the ropes seemed to experience the greatest amount of punishment. .Following was tho second part of the programme:—Selection, Orchestra; recitation “Big Steamers,’’ John AVhitcombo: song “The Rosebud,” Elma B mitt; pianoforte solo “Home Sweet Homo,” Nellie Gannnan ; recitation “I he Sailor Boy,” Leslie Jones: song “If I Were tho Only Girl,” Ciaudine Man - ; dance “Frolic,” Helen and Molly'Wood ; recitation “His Parting Gift,” Norman Ward; song “Wo Shall' All Do the Goose Step,” Joan Sutcliffe and chorus; dancing steps, Senior Girls; song “Mother Machree, ” Alec and Eileen Cullen; recitation “The Night’s Toast, ” Gladys Gamman; pianoforte solo “Ripples of the Alleghany, ” Yalda Savage; song “Wee Dock and Dons,” Roberta Arbuckle. * Every' item of the programme was accorded a most tempestuous reception, two or three recalls being responded to. During a break in the programme, the.chairman of the School Committee (Mr McDonald), thanked ail those who had contributed to the success of the entertainment, and during the singing of Miss Roberta Arbuckle’s song there wts quite a rain of money on the stage. The takings at the door amounted to nearly £l(>, and the amount of money thrown on the stage amounted to 12s Sd.
