FAREWELL SOCIAL AT UPPER TUTAENUI.
The Upper Tutaenui School was well fill a -1 last Wednesday evening, tbe occasion being a farewell to Private Jno. Johnston and Trooper G. de Bathe Brandon, both young men well known in the district. Proceedings were opened by the audience singing tbe National Anthem. Then followed a pianoforte duet by the Misses Johnston, the rendering of which evoked hearty and welhmerited applause. Songs were contributed by Misses Hampton, Meads and Griffin and Messrs Maclure and Pickering, while Miss and Master Goebel sang a song in unison. All the songs were artistically rendered, and recalls were frequent. Recitations by Mr J. Wood and the Rev. L. Hunt delighted the audience. The accompaniments were played by Misses Johnston and Meads.
At the close of the musical programme he Rev. L. Hunt, on behalf of the residents of the district, presented each recruit with a wristlet watch and. a pocket Testament. Much regret was felt at the inability ot Trooper Brandon to be present, but he was represented by Private Sutherland.
Private Johnston, in a neat speech, thanked the friends for their presents and good wishes on behalf of himself and Trooper Brandon, Then followed cheers and the singing of “For they are jolly good fellows.’ Snpper was handed round, and brought to a close a very pleasant evening.
