THE WAIHI SITUATION.

■ P- : , * A REMARKABLE SCENE. EXCITING CONFLICT WITH THE, POLICE. Per Press Association. Waihi, November-1 There was a remarkable scene, in the'main street on Saturday night as the”outcome of a big rally by the iy unemployed and their women folk. • ? At an early hour of the evening ill-smelling eggs were projected indiscriminately among the crowd m •the different streets, and the appearance of • a -eontraetor who had resumed work that day was the signal for a rally. A mob of women rushed towards him, howling- and hurling • all kinds of epithets, and pandemonium ensued. The contractor was_ followed by the crowd- but scon the police took a hand and barred the progress of the mob. Then mounted constables swept up the street scattering the crowd right and left. On .reaching 1 the corner of the chief point 'of interest a constable rode the thickest of the howling excited crowd down the footpath scattering the crowd in all directions. Many rushed through ana, over the timber yard fence, amongst them, it is ;dated, being Mr Semple, who is said to have leaped the fence. The scene opposite the Miners’ Hall as the mounted constable approached almost beggared description. The women fought their way into the narrow entrance of the hall, many of the women being thrust aside by the men in their eagerness to get inside. The constable then repeated his performance on the other sido of the .street, and within ten minutes of his first appeaauce the mob was completely dispersed, and .quiet restored. Strangely .enough’ no one was injured.
