CAPTAIN SCOTT’S EXPEDITION.

I Per Press Association, i Christchurch, October 31. Commander Evans, of the British ( Antarctic Expedition, in. the course of an interview, stated that all the relief stores to be taken south are being sent out in the New Zealand Clipping Company’s steamers tine Jtdh about the end pt Norn ijjtte- -m, , Nova will take .vember.;- . r.Lue_ -l aud supplies “in. a full year s store.. _ *| 10 Antarctic, case she is detained in - frnn , The actual date ?of Lyttelton will depend on, tne*’ rangements to ; be made, by Lieut. ,Pennell'and Mr D. G. Lillie regard- ' ing some important biological work which has been planned. In all probability the Terra Nova will return to New Zealand and be back in Lyttelton by ,the end of March next year/ . ■ ' V- ‘ Commander Evans said he v expected to find that Lieut. Campbell and party had reached the main basejof the expedition at Cape Evans in April last.. It will.be-remembered, that Lieut. Campbell had to land at Evaiis Cove, Terra Nova Bay, and he probably found his way to Gape Evans, a distance of over 300 miles, by skirting the coast line; as it would be impossible to march direct across the sea ice to McMurdo Sound. Lieut. |Campbell and his men would thus he able to strengthen the large party for this season’s work. It was probable that Gapt. Scott himself would lead the large party this ' season to explore from Boardmore glacier to the. south eastward,a nd so complete : and map in the southern boundaries 'of the' great ice barrier. Commander Evans said that Gapt; Scott and Ms party would probably have 'reached the South Pole on January i Mth or IStlx 1 last, and they would ;have-returned'to' Hut Point about ; March' I’Ofeh. They would then have ■to wait until the sea ice had frozen ' over in order to cover the 15 miles : between , Hiit . Point (the head- : quarters- 'of tlie Discovery expedition), and' the • present headquarters at Cape Evans. On the last occasion ; Gapt. Scott’s parties were forced to ; remain, [at Hitt*; Point. and did not succeed in - reaching Commander Evans until - April'l3th, after which date tlie sea was- completely frozen over in McMurdo Sound. It is expected’ that Gapt; Scott and his sledging'parties - ' will' all have, returned to Gape Evans by the end of January next; When* the Terra Nova 1 reaches- Cape Evans, in Me- - stores - aud equipment from tile 1 main l base .will be embarked, and ' the deader ' (Gapt Scott) will then - carry- out’ whatever plans be may haVe/madO-for the ship. ;
