DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES.
The annual gift sale for Dr. Baruarclo’s Homes by the ladies of Upper Tutaeuui was held on Gray Bros. ’ grounds on Wednesday afternoon. The function was an undoubted success and'roflects great credit upon the baud of ladies in 'charge. The afternoon was sunny and calm, all that could be desired to favour the .coming of visitors. The spot chosen for the sale and gathering was the edge of a fine piece of native bush. Willing hands had erected awnings and arranged stalls, tables and seats. There was a line display of work, plain and fancy, done by the Ladies’ Guild, which had been meeting each week for months past. A large of produce gifts, butter, jams, eggs, mutton, vegetables, etc., formed a bulky and substantial array on the “farm table.” The children were not forgotten in the toy and lolly stall. The sale was opened shortly after two o’clock with short addresses by Revs. A. Porter and J. Mather. Both speakers spoke' in high terms of the very laudable effort put forth by the ladies off the district to aid the noble work carried on by the Dr. Barnardo workers in London. They pointed out that such a work must increasingly appeal to everyone. It was an effort to save and educate helpless motherless children. The Rev. Porter read out the receipt from the secretary of the Baruado Homes for £3O sent along as the result of last year’s garden party. The letter expressed in very grateful terms the thanks of the London workers to the Upper Tutaeuui ladies for their fine gift. By three o’clock there was a very .large gathering-on the grounds of friends and visitors from all parts of the district. It was very evident that the whole community holds in great favour this annual outing and sale for Dr. Barnardo’s Homes. During the afternoon games were indulged in while the ladies dispensed a liberal supply of sandwiches and cakes with the refreshing cup of tea. The Marton Junction Band, under Bandmaster Sharpe, very kindly drove up and gave their services during the afternoon. The bright lively Music rendered helped towards the success of the whole affair. Goods on the stalls found a ready sale, for at the close only a few articles remained of the plain and fancy goods. These will be disposed of during the year. Where so many of the ladies worked so well together it would be invidious to mention names. It must have been very gratifying to the president and her committee to know that everyone was so delighted'with the afternoon’s proceedings, and that the net sales resulted in over £26 10s. This will yet be augmented by money gifts yet to come in which will bring the total sum well up to last year’s gift. Before dispersing the gathering at the request of Mr Bartlett votes of thanks were carried to all who had helped in the sale, to Gray Bros, for so kindly gh iug the use of their grounds, and to the members of Marton Junction Baud for their valuable services during the day.
