Per Press Association. • Auckland, March 26. On Wednesday night the master of the scow Winnie, lying at Tryphena, Great Barrier, developed a violent form of mania. It is stated that without provocation he ferociously attacked the mate, who in selfdefence was forced to handle his assailant very roughly with bis fists. The master of the scow was placed on the steamer Waitangi, bound for Auckland, and off Gape Colville he jumped overboard. A boat waa lowered smartly, and as tbe man swam strongly in the wake of tbe steamer he was picked up and got aboard smartly. On tbe arrival of the Waitangi in town he was brought before the Court and remanded to the mental hospital for observation til! Wednesday.
