At tbe Supreme Court to-day Mr Justice Cooper released on three years’ probation Haram Ashcroft and Arthur Hanlan, who pleaded guilty to charges of forging telegrams defrauding a bookmaker of £27 18s. The Judge said ha did not wish to send them to prison, but to give them a chance of reformation, but made conditions extremely stringent. Tbe lads are not to bet or attend race meetings. He commented Strongly on street betting, but recognised the difficulty of the police in getting convictions, Tudor Nugent Baker, who pleaded guilty to falling to keep proper books was fined £3O, and ordered to pay £lO costs. The Judge remarked that as he had pleaded guilty in June last it would be necessary to sentence him to about nine months and to impcee a term of short imprisonment. as the term commenced from tbe data on which he pleaded guilty. He was bringing the matter under the notice of the Government. Auckland, February 25. At Auckland Supreme Court Tom Deans, charged with the embezzlement of £97, the property of George Davis, tailor, of Auckland, pleaded guilty. He admitted that he was a married man and left his wife in Christchurch without having made provision for her. He went to Sydney with another woman, but claimed that he only intended taking the latter to her sister. Be had received an anonymous letter stating that his wife had left him. This was the cause of all the Accused was sentenced to two years’ hard labour. At the Supreme Court in civil jurisdiction it was announced that the case of Official Assignee v. Mrs Jane Isabelle Lennox, wife of J. M. Lennox, sharebroker, had been settled, Mrs Lennox having agreed to contribute a specific sum in the event of a deficiency in the estate of J. M. Lennox after realisation of the Queen Street property. As far as could be seen the arrangement should secure all creditors 20s in the pound and end the litigation. Christchurch, February 25. Justice Sim gave judgment this morning in the appeals Peter Grant and Edgar Neat from the Magistrate’s decision convicting them of street betting. Grant’s appeal was allowed and the conviction set aside. As the case was a police prosecution no order was made as to costs. Neat’s appeal was disallowed and appellant ordered to pay coats.
