DEATH OF A JOCKEY.

The which befel F. Whitahouse, who rode Arcadia at Rangitikei Races at Bulls yesterday, ended fatally at the Palmerston Hospital at 5.30 this morning. The news of his death will be received with widespread regret, in sporting and other circles, as deceased was a ws'i-known rider in the North Island., His fall from Arcadia yesterday happened at the first hurdle into the straight, and young Whitehousa fell heavily on his head, rendering him unconscious. It was thought by many the horse rolled over him, but as seen from the i-qvss Stand this was not the case. Th« Ambulance Corps were quickly on the scene and the sufferer was removed to the Racing Club’s new accommodation bouse Lwhere he received first aid and shortly after a dncfcor was called in who ordered his speedy removal tu Palmorston hospital. Ha had a fairly good journey, but the injury to his head was so severe as to cause death this morning. Deceased was well-known in sporting circles and 'us services as a rider ware much > aght after, particularly in cross c-..-ntry > events and hurdle races, in which be generally figured conspicuously. Ho rode many winners during his racing career, and among hia successes were on Clovis, Rags, Hard work, Roar, Bullworfcb, Peruvian and a number of other {horses. He was a most unfortunate rider, having met with many mishaps. At Marton meeting in 1908 ha received a .nasty tali off Bnllworfeh which laid him aside for three months. He was at one time connected with several well-known stables, and was riding f or Mr Tilley at Fordeii for some time. Ha lived with Mr E. Morse at Sandcn at the time whan Hard work met his successes. Death was due to a fractured skull and hemorrhage of the brain. Deceased married Miss Olsen and recently settled in his new home at Greenmeadows, Napier. His relatives are living at Otaki.
