ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Per Press Association. Anokland, February 28. James Butler, a single man, aged 23, was drowned at Devonport shortly before onp o’clock yesterday. Butler, who was employed by the Devonport Borough Council, arrived home shortly after mid-day and went out immediately for a bathe on the beach, At about five minutes to one o’clock, two >men, Clifford Oarryer and H. E. Cooper, who were bathing near by, saw deceased coming ashore, calling out as he did so. They swam out towards him, but he they could reach him, and some ten minutes elapsed before the body was recovered. Dr. Atkinson endeavoured to induce artificial respiration for about forty minutes, but without success. Deceased was a son of the Manager of the Central Mine at Broken Hill. Auckland, March 1. Percy Bennett, 17 years, was swimming oft Chelsea on Saturday. He was seen by his companion to throw np his arms and sink. His body was subsequently recovered. Bennett was a strong swimmer and it is supposed he was seized by cramp. Eltham, March 1.
John Jones, about 45 years of age, a labourer, employed at Matapu s was home from Eltham on Saturday night when he was thrown from his horse and killed. An inquest will be held to-day.
