In a pre-sessioual address last; night Mr Barber, member for New* town; quoted figures supplied by thd Superintendent of the Department showing the operations of the .Advances to Workers’.Act, which lias been in force five and a half mouths.During that period CD applications for advances covering a total of £8(5,245 had been recoire.l. Of that number 255, covering a sum of. £65,970 had been granted by the Board. Six applicants declined the grants authorised, the amounts totalling £ISOO. The netfnumber oijapi plications authorised therefore is 249 and the sum involved £64,470 classified according to provincial districts as follows; —Auckland, No. 80, £20,080; Taranaki, 2, £275 ; Hawke’s Bay, 15, £3855; Wellington, 75, £19,625; Marlborough, 6, £l-455; Nelson, 1, £325 ; Westland, 7, £1330; Canterbury, 49, £14,265; Otago, 10, £2915 ; Southland, 10, £1945 ; totals
