BETTING ON BOROUGH RESERVE

Bookmakers’ Appeal Dismissed. Per Press Association New Plymouth, May 31. The judgment of Judge Cooper in appeals by bookmakers against convictions in the S.M. Court for betting at the New Plymouth Christmas meeting was delivered to-day. The principal ground for appeal on law was the validity of the borough by-law to prohibit betting. In an exhaustive judgment the Court held that the Borough Council had power by this by-law to prohibit tho carrying on of tho business of bookmaking at all times upon the reserve, and therefore during race meeting. The appeal w r as dismissed with £7 7s costs against appellant.
