I Weekly Meeting. On Wednesday night there were present—The Mayor (Mr LawrieV, Crs Hart, Pollock, Comrie, John?, Berriman and> Bilkey. The amount collected, with what the Council had in hand, was about £4O, so if it was possible to coll ct a similar amount they should hi in a p >«ition to build a station and buy uniforms. Cra Hamilton, Pollock, Comrie and Hart were appointed to consider the matter; also the question of insurance of the firemen. The Town Clerk remarked that he did not know how the £4O, referred to, was made up. WHO PAYS? Replies were read from several borr.ughs, most of which said that where water was fupplied by meter the landlord was held responsible. Cr Hamilton: It's the landlord, then. The Mayor: Apparently. The tenant is sent the bill, but if doesn't pay the lanaloid has to. No finality was arrived at, hut this matter will doubtless ,be incorporated in the by-laws. RECREATION GROUND. E. Roose wrote intimating that it was the intention to retain eight acres on Doctor's Hill at the site of the proposed recreation ground. They were prepared, however, to sell 15 acres for £IOOO, subject to certain conditions as to rights-of-way, etc. This question was deferred until a reply comes ftom Mr Masaey, who has been asked as to the position of the promised recreation ground giant. Cr Comrie thought an effort should be made to get the sandstone quany from Mr Roose. The Mayor: No doubt the quarry is convenient, si:d wu should try to make some arrangements about it. Cr Comrie was authorised to interview Mr Rcose and ascertain what could be done. THE WATER WORKS. Mr Wyett reported that a start had been made with the installation of the air compressors. The Mayor said he had bpen given to understand that the machinery would be in working order by next Tuesday, and then they would be able to go on pumping to the reservoir. On Mr Wyett's suggestion it was decided to ask Mr Suggste if any provision had been maie for an overflow for the well lhe statement was ramie that several of the pipes were leaking. GENERAL. (Jr Conine suggested that a road drag should be employed to fill up the ruts, etc. -The foreman said that on some roads it would be a waste of time without using the plough also. —Cr Comrie: Where a little ploughing is needed, get it done.—The foreman was so instructed. J. H. Brooks, secretary Urury Progressive League, intimated that Mr Massey had acceded to the request that he should receive a deputation on railway matters connected with this section of the line. He would advise the Council of the date later on. D. Dalton ask.d tnat a certain fence destroyed by fitting-in works be re-erected.—Agreed to. It was reported that th- dead horse on Custello's property had been limed. No surface water was polluted, and as preparation waj being made for the burial of the carcase no action \\ as necissai v. -j A Committee ol the Whole was . appointed to into the queation of by-laws. . ■• The Town Clerk was appointed treasurer to the borough, and empowered tj sign cheques. It was decided to pay £2G 19s 6d . (interest on loan monty. utc.) due A to the Puktkohe East Road Boad, and payment of which was disputed ' by the old town Board.
