THE MAYOR'S RESIGNATION
" We nolhimj extenuate, nor net down awjhl in malice."
It is with profound regret that wo lmvo to record the resignation of tho first Mayor of Pukekohe, Mr W. Dunn. This fooling is, we arc sure, shared by all the members of tho Council and by an overwhelming proportion of tho poople of the borough. Since assuming ollico Mr Dunn lias had a period of porsonal sacrifice. In the eourco of an articlo iu May Inst, when the Mayoral election was decided, wo said : " As Chief Magistrate Mr Dunn accepts rlutios which are bound to be onerous and to heavily tax his time and his abilities. That ho will discharge his duties fearlessly wo have no doubt, and it w ill not bo denied that ho brings to the offico a keen bucinoss ability and a sterling capacity for hard work." Those words tho late Mayor has entirely justified. On July 21, when tho Mayor offered his services for " u solid week," wo said : "This offer is a much more onerous aiid self-sacrificing one than many people may suppose, and for it the Mayor deserves the heartiest thanks of i'\ery ratepayer." As wo know now tie- aerilienwas ini'ieased .sevenfold, for "sown solid weeks" wore spent by Mr Dunn in close clerical drudgery in order to have tho Town
Board accounts ready for (lie ratepayers before tin; loan proposals were submitted. This work was quito outside the Mayoral functions; it was work that an accountant ought to have boon employed to do. However, Mr Dunn generously undertook to give his services to the people, and his special knowledgo of local body bookkeeping requirements was much more valuable than the labours of an averago accountant would have been. For ourselvos we desire to thank Mr Dunn for his Mayoral courtesy to us personally and for his cheerful readiness at all times to facilitate the local work of the press. During his term of office we only once had occasion to dissent from his courso of action, and even that action was easily pardonable since it was prompted by chivalrous impulse. Writing with a closo acquaintance of the work of a good many local bodies we can say that wo know of no Mayor who has worked moro devotedly thau Mr Dunn has done, l'y hi.l retirement the borough sutlers a distinct loss. We cannot think of another in this borough who would have made equal sacritices, while bringing anything like an equal amount of sagacity and capacity for higli-teiiM'm work to the Mayoral office. In cuid typo this seems high praiso but wo feel confident that the sentiments will be cordially endorsed by the peoplo of Pukekohe.
