WAIKATO RIVER BOARD.

SATURDAY'S MEETING.

Messrs Glass (Chairman) Walker, Ballard, Wily, Dean, Hill and Gallery were present at Saturday's meeting of the Waikato River Board. Discussion ensued regarding the position of the lato engineer (Mr Mouett). G. Lapwood, who had lent two barges on condition that they would be returned upon application, complained that he had been kept waiting for them and that £ 1 per day would be charged from that day (J uly 6th). —Mr Walker said he would fix the matter up. Sir J. G. Ward intimated that he would put the position regarding the Board's scheme before the Prime Minister. A Member: But Mr Mackenzie isn't Prime Minister now. G. Hull, chairman of the Aka Aka drainage board, asked if he could be supplied with aiplan of the river works. Mr Glass said they had no spare copy but if Aka Aka sent anyone up they could take a tracing of the office plan. Under date July Ist, C. D. Kennedy, the Board's consulting engineer wrote: —" Although there were only a few chains of the training wall completed at the time of my visit, there was quite sufficient to show that a very slight scour will deepen the bed of the river, and works already done haviug appreciably hid the effect corroborated the opinion by me in my original leport. I am also of the opinion that the proposed works will not prejudice the water channels by means of which the Aka Aka and Otaua settlers obtain coal, gravel etc. The training walls will, no doubt, cut off a good deal of water in ordinary weather, but they will also stop, in a greater measure, the sand drift along the bottom of the river, which is a great factor in blocking up the channel." The Board's solicitor gave the opinion that the high lands in the Board's area must be rated. As it was decided to suspend work on the 16th inst, and lay up the plant, it was arranged that the Secretary (Mr Beamish) will work only two days a week until active operations begin afresh. It was decided to have Mature meetings of the Board as required, the Chairman aud Mr Gallery to decide the dates. Discussions on tiuance, with a bit of a breeze, are reported elsewhere.
