TO BE LAID UP.
WAIKATO RIVER BOARD PLANT.
In view of their inability to obtain further moneys from the Government the Waikato Kiver Board has decided to lay up its plant after the 16th inst and to suspend operations until the amending legislation now prepared is passed. The liabilites to that date, to complete the first groin, were figured out at £165, and after that amount is paid there would remain 3s 4d. Word from Government was that the Departments did not know of any promise of £4,000; the on!y thing they knew of was the £2,000 granted last year and paid. Mr Ehodes, M.P. for Thames, wired that there was no chance of further grants until the amending bill had passed. Mr Glass (chairman) said at Saturday's meeting of the Board that the best thing members could do was to guarantee the money at the bank by a joint-and-several. He was quite prepared to pay his whack. Mr Ballard : It's not a question of paying your whack. They might come for the lot on me or—(to Mr Wily)—on you. Mr Wily (laughing): They are not going to come on me. Mr Ballard : And I may say that I am not going to sign any guarantee.
