MORGAN’S ROAD

LINK TO PIAKOITI Matamata Engineer to Make Survey Representations were made to the Matamata County Council at the last meeting to review the proposed opening up and construction of a road from Morgan’s Road in the Peria riding to Fiakoiti Road in Fiako county. In a letter the Fiako County Council stated members were favourably disposed to reaching finality ir, the matter (which had been considered some years ago) and if the Matamata council agreed the question of the best site and estimated cost could then be d ! scussed. Mr G. W. Ensor (engineer) stated that he had had the problem in view for a long time, but had not had an epportunity of making any survey. The absence of metal nearby had been one difficulty in Mr Fitzgerald’s time, but since then metal had been found near where the road would enter the Fiakoiti area. Cr. E. D. White (chairman) said a route for the road had been looked att many years ago, the idea then being that many sections would be subdivided if a road was put A danger was the amount of ragwort in the back area. However, he felt that there might not be the same co-operation to-day on the part of owners, who might not be so interested now owing to changed conditions. However, a main consideration of the council was the wishes of owners and at the moment the only' approach had been from settlers in the Fiakoiti district. Originally a road was suggested through what was Spain’s property and it appeared to be the only logical route. On that route it meant a big lift from the flat, with a narrow winding road on the damp side of cuttings, and so the road would be costly to maintain. The idea was to link with Morgan’s Road to the creek and then over to the Fiakoiti area. Any road made should be a standard one on which two trucks could pass. , Cr. D. McCarthy remarked that any road should be designed to secure the most cutting up of land that was possible. He did not think that there would be any. serious danger from ragwort, as the whole of the Fiakoiti district was infested with the weed before it was closely settled, and now •it was almost free from the trouble and cows were being milked. In his opinion it was essential for the engineer to look at the whole position and report to the council on the matter.

It was agreed to advise the Fiako County Council that as soon as the engineer could make the time available he would report on the whole position.
