MATAMATA COUNTY ROAD WORK

ENGINEER’S REPORT The following report by Mr G. W. Ehsor (engineer) was adopted at the January meeting of the Matamata County Council:— Good progress continues to be made with the various improvement works, while general maintenance proceeds steadily. Prior to Christmas all roads were in fair order, blit the prolonged dry spell is now having its effect on loose metal surfaces. In a few instances the heavy fern growth on uncleared frontages has reduced visibility on bends. Work of clearing will have to be done as soon as manpower is available. The fire risk has increased considerably since Christmas, and it has been deemed necessary to prohibit the lighting of fires in the open in the southen part of the county. Care should be exercised, however, in all areas. No fire should be lit while the surrounding country is tinderdry and all outbreaks should be extinguished promptly. Construction work during December included the following:— Waotu Main Road: Deviations and reconstruction for two miles south of the Hodderville junction are completed to base course metalling stage. French Pass: All earthwork on the gully section has been completed and the surface lightly metalled and sanded: As consolidation takes place further metal will be applied. Te Whetu Road: Further metalling has been carried 6ut and si;* miles of this 'road now has a light metal surface. Attention is now required with a grader, but some rain is first required to obtain consolidation. Waotu-Lichfield Road: An im--1 provement was made to the Duff’s Hill section of this road, by widening and easing of bends with the bulldozer and grader. Access Road (Puketurua): By arrangement with Lands Development branch, a 48-in diameter r.c. culvert was laid and a short length of road - way formed to give access to two rehabilitation settlers. Maungatautari Road: A length of 50 chains from the junction of No 1 8 State highway to and including the approaches to the lake bridge was given a sealing coat of No. 1 tar. Hinuera-Matamata: 16 chains of this road fronting the Hinuera school and domain was shaped and sealed with No. 1 tar. Putaruru-Tapapa (488) "M.H.: All preliminaries have now been completed and ’ earthwork is to commence about the middle bf January. Old, Te Aroha Road: Monetary authority has now been received and work has commenced. Building Permits Permits issued for the nine months ended September 30 1949, were: Dwellings, 80, value £96,979; other buildings, 152, value £65,269; total, 232, value £162,248.
