WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

LICHFIELD MEETING Mrs R. Burgess presided over the January meeting of the Lichfield Women’s Institute, which opened with the singing of the National Anthem and ode and the recitation of the creed. She then welcomed the visitors, Mesdames /J. Dodd '(Hamilton), O. J. Doidge (Christchurch) and Miss M. Doidge, each toeing presented with a spray. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames C. Fordyce, W. J. Baldwin, J. Lowe and T. Dodd. A birthday spray was presented to Mrs Mac Lynn. The roll call, “how I spent my Christmas,” was popular, each member describing her day to the interest of the others. Discussion took place on the festival to be held at Matamata and the conference to be held at Christchurch. " Another interesting book on England was received from Badminton, far which the secretary had sent a letter of thanks. The appeal for soap for Badminton, it was reported, had met with some response but a further collection would be held in February so that a larger: parcel could be sent. During December the institute combined with the Lichfield school committee to hold a picnic for school children in the domain. Balloons, races, sweets, and ice cream were enjoyed by the young folk, and Mrs Burgess thanked the institute committee for its contribution to a successful day, which was highlighted by a delightful lunch and afternoon tea. Competitions resulted as follows: six pods of peas, Mrs A. W. Vincent I, Mrs R. Jamieson 2; jar of gooseberry jam, Mrs A. W. Vincent 1, Mrs R. Jamieson 2; mystery parcel, Mrs F. Ash. Hostesses for the afternoon tea were Mesdames W. Peters, junr., C. Vosper and J. Gough. Gardening Circle Mrs F. C. Wooffindin presided over the January meeting of the Lichfield Women’s Institute gardening circle when apologies were received from Mesdames W. J. Baldwin, Jim Hamilton, J. Gough, I. Wood, A. W. Vincent and J. D. A. Cox. It was decided that each member of the circle receive a gift of a rose bush, members to select the plant they wished purchased. Competitions resulted: three blooms, Mrs Jamieson 1, Mrs John Hamilton 2. A lovely floral bouquet was won by Mrs R. Burgess.
